Limit Character Input to UITextField's Visible Region

I have a UITextField. Is it possible to limit the # of characters the user types based on the visible width of the text field?

So let's say the textfield is 250 pixels wide. Using a 14pt system font the # of characters allowed in the visible region of the text field (no scrolling) will vary due to the proportional font. I would like the input to stop once the user has reached the edge of the text field.
